Happy Birthday Florence Nightingale and Happy International Nurses' Day
On May 12, we celebrate what would be Florence Nightingale's 196th birthday. It's also International Nurses' Day and the two are not mutually exclusive. It is becaue of Florence Nightingale's incredible achievements and contributions to the medical industry that May 12 was selected as International Nurse's Day.
Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1980 in Florence, Tuscany and passed away at the age of 90-years-old on August 13, 1910. She is credited with the founding of modern day nursing, and her skills were invaluable during the Crimean War. You may read Florence Nightingale's biography at the King's College London.
Every May 12, people around the world celebrate International Nurses Day and take this day to show honor, respect and appreciation the contributions nurses make every day.
In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland proposed a national day to celebrate nurses, but then president Dwight D. Eisenhower didn't approve the request. However; in January 1974, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) determined that nurses' day would be celebrated every May 12.
