Have you ever wondered about the history of chocolate chips? Most people are introduced to chocolate chips as the main ingredient in Nestle Toll House cookies. What's interesting to learn is that Nestle's Toll House chocolate chips, are the original chocolate chip. In fact, the inventor of chocolate chips (Ruth Wakefield) worked at the Toll House Inn, then made a legal arrangement with Nestle that she would receive a life-long supply of chocolate and in exchange, her recipe for delicious Nestle's Toll House chocolate chip cookies would remain on their packaging for all time. Here are the full details!
According to New England Recipes, Ruth Wakefield (June 17, 1903 – January 10, 1977) an educator and dietitian, bought an inn with her husband and was always on the lookout for new recipes. The inn was the Toll House Inn and she decided to add something to the butterscotch nut cookie recipe she served guests. Though the cookies were popular, she just wanted to make it different and offer some variety. Wakefield discussed the creation of the Toll House chocolate chip cookie in a 1970 interview.
"We had been serving a thin, butterscotch nut cookie with ice cream. Everybody seemed to love it, but I was trying to give them something different. So I came up with the Toll House cookie."
There have been various accounts and stories as to how the Toll House chocolate chip cookie was invented, but Ruth Wakefield told the story several times in her own words, clearing up any misconceptions. After Wakefield's cookies became a hit, demand was great and Nestle realized that people needed chocolate in chip form. Until then, Wakefield was breaking chocolate into bite sized, chip pieces in order to make her cookies.
New England Recipes also has a feature on the history of chocolate chips. You can learn more about the evolution of the chocolate chip from tea biscuits and candy to chocolate morsel at the site.
